Books to Read to Kids I Want to One Day Read to Mine

I do like to read middle grade and young reader books which I talk about a bit more here but now I also keep my eye on the children's section and even the adult stacks with a mind to a dream: of sitting by the bedside of a happy child as I read from a book I love and they are coming to love on a normal night in my future life. Here are the ones I'm holding in my dream.

Middle Grade Books for Adults To Help You Reconnect to Your Childlike Joy

When was the last time you posted up in the kids' section of Barnes and Noble? If you're a mom, you might be like, "Um, yesterday?" But I am not yet a mother! I am a 28-year-old woman who, to the average passerby, has no reason to be in the children's section of Barnes and Noble.

It may or may not be a radical notion to you, dear reader, but I believe in children's books for grown ups wholeheartedly. My best friend always says girls are born knowing exactly who we are and what we like, and then we turn twelve and the world starts slowly taking those things away from us.

Hi! I’m Vic.

Have you ever been in love? It doesn’t have to have been with a paramour. It just has to be that feeling where fate brings you some thing or someone or some circumstance and every building block of what you are feels exactly where and how it’s supposed to be. Whether you’re discovering the person you’re supposed to love or the purpose you’re supposed to fulfill, you are flooded with joy, wonder, and hope. You see with complete certainty that God (the universe, Allah, Christ; however you know God to be) is a benevolent and kind helper, who is always working to bring you the happiest place and the perfect time.

If you we are lucky enough to be a happy child for however short of a time, I believe we felt that way all the time. Every little moment and new experience was steeped in love like a peach in syrup; filled us with joy and wonder at the simple fact that we get to be alive. As adults, responsibility and fear diminish our openness and immediate connection to that ability, to see everything through eyes of love. We often don’t feel that way until we are blessed with the halcyon days of a new romance. But we need that feeling so much more than just in our relationships, which happen largely beyond our control.

We need to love food. We need to love sunlight. We need to love our work and our coworkers and our neighbors and the profound gift of getting to wake up in the morning for one more day; to have hope that we’re going somewhere good. To feel these feelings, to feel good regularly seems such a monumental task for so many and it really can be. But monuments are built brick by brick. It is my firm belief that one small act of love can transform your life. Even in the pits of despair one small gift given in good faith to yourself or another can set you on a path to reach your wildest dreams in the blink of an eye. We never know what it is at first. Reading a book we found on a park bench. Deciding to drink more water in the morning. Getting a new toothbrush. But that little boost of good feeling snowballs and you seek more good feelings until you look up one day in a life you love.

Here is where I place small, accessible acts of love that can open your heart to your best possibilities and just make you feel a bit better when you need it. Book recommendations, easy tested mindfulness rituals, gratitude and romance practices, gentle life improvement tips, and all things to feed your heart and soul.
